When a Dimensional Issue Becomes a Shared Challenge for the Team

During the development of a new product for a client, a problem arose.
The company’s technical engineers, quality engineers, and production supervisors were discussing this aluminum forging. They were facing a practical problem encountered during the product development process.
 
The overall appearance of the product showed no obvious abnormalities, and most dimensions met the drawing specifications.
However, one critical dimension consistently deviated after heat treatment.
 
For the technical engineers, the first question was: Could material flow during the forging process have caused localized deformation?
 
The quality engineers presented inspection data comparing dimensional changes before and after heat treatment. The data indicated that this variation was recurring and not merely a random measurement error.
 
The production supervisor also provided on-site information: under different production conditions, this area did indeed exhibit varying degrees of deformation.
 
These three different perspectives all pointed to the same problem.
 
Rather than simply passing the problem from one department to another, they worked together to identify the root cause.
 
The technical team reanalyzed the forging and preforming plans; the quality team conducted a more in-depth analysis of the dimensional data and inspection methods; and the production team examined the on-site die temperature, billet heating, and actual operating conditions.
 
Ultimately, the solution emerged from the integration of this information.
 
Following process adjustments, the critical dimensions were revalidated, and the optimized parameters were incorporated into subsequent production controls.
 
This was merely a dimensional issue with a single aluminum forging.
